·Editorial Desk·Khuzdar, Balochistan

The Frontier Record documents the case of Asma Jattak (also reported as Asma Baloch) of Khuzdar, Balochistan, as set out in a case study prepared by Paank, the human-rights wing of the Baloch National Movement. Paank describes a decade-long, state-enabled campaign of coercion and violence against Asma and her family — one that, it says, Pakistani authorities have not merely failed to stop but have actively enabled through their support for death squads.

More than a decade of persecution

According to Paank, the family’s ordeal began in 2014, when they were forcibly displaced from their ancestral village of Anjeera, in Surab district, and their homes were bulldozed — an expulsion Paank attributes to forces linked to former Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Sanaullah Zehri, and which it says is corroborated by satellite imagery. Uprooted, the family resettled in Khuzdar.

Since then, Paank’s report states, Asma has faced relentless forced-marriage coercion by an armed group led by Zahoor Jamalzai — described by Paank and local residents as a death squad operating under Zehri’s patronage. The report says those who stood in the group’s way were killed one by one: her fiancé, Abdul Salam, an engineering student; her uncle, Ashraf Nichari; and two community leaders, Wadera Ghulam Sarwar Mosiani and Sardarzada Kamran Jattak.

A promised agreement, then inaction

Paank says that despite a written government agreement in February 2025 promising the immediate arrest of the primary accused and protection for the Jattak family, the authorities took no action. Instead, according to the report, the accused has continued to operate with impunity — appearing openly armed within the political protocol of Nawab Sanaullah Zehri, which Paank presents as evidence of backing from the Pakistani state and military.

A father assassinated

Most recently, on 4 August 2026, Asma’s father, Master Inayat Ullah Jattak, was shot dead near his home in the Shahzad City area of Khuzdar. According to police, a case was registered on the complaint of his son Hameedullah — himself a police constable — who named Zahoor Ahmed Jamalzai and three other men; four have been booked. The FIR records that the main accused had previously threatened the family over Asma’s refusal to marry him, and that the shooting came roughly two hours after Asma released a public video appeal for protection.

The men named in the FIR remain accused; no one has yet been convicted in connection with the killings, and Paank’s broader allegations of state and political patronage are its own documented findings.

Paank’s appeal

Paank warns that the risk to Asma and her surviving relatives is critical and imminent. It has called on the United Nations, the European Union, and the wider international community to intervene immediately and provide independent protection for the family.
