BNP Protests Across Balochistan Over Sorab Killings

·Editorial Desk·Sorab & Quetta, Balochistan

Protests spread across Balochistan under the banner of the Balochistan National Party (BNP) over an incident in the Sorab (Surab) district in which people, including women and children, were killed and at least 16 wounded. Demonstrations were held in Quetta and several other areas, with authorities blocking the routes leading to the Quetta Press Club.

What happened at Sorab

The casualties occurred at Killi Abdul Rahim Merwani, in the Korki Gondan area of Sorab (also reported as Gidar Goandhan). Accounts of the death toll differ sharply: the report cited by the BNP put it at six killed and 16 injured, while The Balochistan Post and Baloch nationalist leaders reported a considerably higher toll — more than twenty killed, many of them women and children.

The cause is disputed. The BNP and other nationalist parties allege that the victims were killed and wounded in an aerial attack — by aircraft. The Balochistan government and state agencies, by contrast, say the deaths resulted from a bomb that exploded during bomb-making preparations by militants, followed by the detonation of explosives stored at the site. In early reporting, the military had not issued an official statement confirming the incident.

In the aftermath, bodies were placed on the N-25 Quetta–Karachi highway at Sorab in protest, and BNP-Mengal leader Sardar Akhtar Mengal publicly questioned the reported targeting of civilians and children.

Protests, and a sealed-off press club

In Quetta, the BNP had announced a protest outside the Press Club, but police blocked all three roads leading to it and deployed a heavy contingent outside. A senior police officer said that with Section 144 in force, and no No Objection Certificate (NOC) obtained from the deputy commissioner, the demonstration would not be permitted. Unable to reach the Press Club, BNP workers instead staged their protest at the chowk near Chaman Gate (Chaman Phatak).

The BNP’s demands

The party condemned the incident and called for an independent judicial inquiry and action against those responsible. Its protests also demanded an end to security-force operations across Balochistan and the recovery of all missing persons.

The killings drew wider condemnation from Baloch political and rights figures, some of whom called for a “Black Day” on 14 August. The dispute over what happened at Sorab — an aerial strike, as nationalists allege, or a militant explosion, as the state maintains — remains unresolved, and the BNP’s central demand is for an independent inquiry to establish the facts.
