Imprisoned for Their Words: Lawyers Imaan Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chattha

Human rights lawyers Imaan Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chattha were sentenced to between 10 and 17 years in prison in January 2026 over social media posts — largely ones expressing solidarity with Baloch and Pashtun activists and criticising the military. Amnesty International, the UN, and international legal bodies have called the case a misuse of cybercrime law to silence dissent.

Pakistan's New Foreign-Media Rules Draw Global Condemnation

Pakistan's Foreign Media Facilitation Guidelines 2026 require foreign correspondents — and Pakistani nationals working for international outlets — to seek government permission to report outside Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore. The rules have been condemned by Amnesty International, the BBC, the CPJ, the HRCP, and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists.
